Setting off from London
How it happened - In his words
One of the guys failed to make it to the start as he damaged his bike on the way to the Tower of London, so he had to get it repaired and joined the group twenty miles in.
We left the Tower of London at 3.05pm, headed out through central London, it was slow going with all the traffic, we averaged just 8mph for the first hour! But we soon hit the country side, and the north and south downs!
Crikey they were hilly, over 3,500ft of climbing. We made it to the ferry in good time and checked in...
It was an early start when we arrived in Dieppe, but soon got on to the thirty mile disused railway line which was divine! It was misty but the sun was starting to break through and the temperature started to hot up. It was fairly uneventful between breakfast and lunch but after lunch we were riding into a strong headwind with a 30+° heat, it was like riding in an oven!!!
After 90 miles we were on the outskirts of Paris and lovely 10 mile section along the seine, riding into Paris was really pleasurable, the drivers really respect the cyclists out there. And so after 117 miles we made it to the Eiffel tower.
After a night out in Paris and river dinner cruise, we decided to give ourselves an extra bit of time as the temperature was again 30+°, so we started off from the Arc de Triomphe, down the Champs Elysees, and back up again in homage to the tour de France. After a photo op by the arc, and being invaded by tourists for their photo ops!! We set off again!
Tracing our previous days ride and it was probably my best days riding ever, it was sublime!, 113 miles later we arrived in Dieppe in good time for our ferry, on the disused railway line we had set the 2nd fastest time this year and 26th fastest of all time on strava! Not bad for having 250 miles in our legs!
After a very short sleep we made our way back over the south and north down's and finally back into central London! Luckily the traffic was a lot better and we made good time to our friends and family back at the tower of London.
A total of 360.8 miles in under 48 hours with over 17,000 feet of climbing and average of 14.5 mph.25/5/2018 8:00:00 AM
